Biography and devotion
St. Nicola Saggio (Nicholas of Longobardi): life, patronage, and devotion
St. Nicola Saggio of Longobardi was born on 6 January 1650 in Longobardi, Calabria, in southern Italy. Baptized Giovanni Battista Clemente Saggio, he grew up in poverty and learned early the habits of labor, prayer and simplicity. Drawn to religious life, he entered the Order of Minims founded by St. Francis of Paola, taking the name Nicola and embracing a vocation marked by humility rather than public office.
As a Minim oblate and religious brother, Nicola spent much of his life in ordinary service: kitchen work, porter’s duties, collecting alms, assisting the poor and carrying out whatever obedience required. These hidden works became the place where his sanctity was formed. The Minims were known for austerity and penitence, and Nicola accepted that spirit with cheerfulness. His obedience was not passive weakness but a deliberate surrender of self-will to God.
Devotional tradition remembers him as a mystic and miracle-worker. He was associated with ecstasies in prayer, prophetic insight and healings through his intercession. His charity drew people to him, though he held no great ecclesiastical office and wrote no famous theological works. He returned to Longobardi for a time and was deeply loved by the people of his native town, but his final years were spent in Rome, where he died on 3 February 1709.
Nicola was beatified in 1786 and canonized by Pope Francis in 2014. The miracle recognized for his canonization concerned a man from Longobardi who fell from scaffolding in 1938 and survived without the grave injuries that should have followed such an accident. This final miracle expressed the devotion that had long surrounded the humble Minim brother. His life speaks especially to those whose holiness is formed in service, obedience and prayer hidden from public notice.
His canonization also highlights a recurring theme in Catholic holiness: a lay brother, without public office, can become a school of prayer for priests, nobles and the poor. In Rome he was remembered for obedience in little tasks, but people also testified to spiritual insight that seemed far beyond education or rank.
His canonization in 2014 brought renewed attention to a form of sanctity that can easily be overlooked: the holiness of the brother who does not govern, preach widely or write books, but whose obedience and prayer make him a spiritual father to many. His life is especially suited to those who need humility, patience and trust in hidden service.
