Biography and devotion
St. Maurice of Carnoët: life, patronage, and devotion
Maurice of Carnoët, also known as Maurice Duault or Maurice of Loudéac, was a Cistercian abbot in Brittany. He is distinct from Maurice, the soldier remembered with the Theban Legion.
After study and teaching, Maurice entered the monastery of Langonnet. He became its abbot and served the community for about thirty years. He later led the foundation of a new monastery at Carnoët, where he continued his work of spiritual leadership. His life joined a desire for solitude with the responsibilities of caring for a monastic community.
He died near the end of the twelfth century, traditionally in 1191. His local cult was confirmed by Pope Clement XI. His remembrance falls on September 29 in the martyrological tradition and on October 5 in the Diocese of Quimper.
