Biography and devotion
St. Mary Magdalene: life, patronage, and devotion
St. Mary Magdalene was a first-century disciple of Jesus and one of the most important women in the Gospel. Luke records that Christ delivered her from seven demons, after which she became part of the group of women who followed Jesus and helped provide for His ministry. Her life therefore begins in the Gospels with liberation and gratitude: she had been rescued by Christ and remained near Him.
She appears most powerfully at the Passion and Resurrection. While many disciples fled, Mary Magdalene stood near the Cross with the holy women and saw where Jesus was buried. On Easter morning she went to the tomb and found it empty. In John’s Gospel she encountered the risen Christ, who spoke her name, “Mary.” She was then sent to announce the Resurrection to the apostles. For this reason the Church has called her apostola apostolorum, the Apostle to the Apostles.
Western tradition for many centuries identified her with the repentant sinner and with Mary of Bethany, while Eastern tradition usually kept those figures distinct. The Roman liturgy now emphasizes what is certain from Scripture: she was a faithful disciple, witness of the Crucifixion, first witness of the Resurrection, and herald of Easter joy.
Later devotional traditions connect Mary Magdalene with preaching in Provence, especially around Saint-Maximin and the Sainte-Baume cave, where she is said to have lived in penance and contemplation. Whether these later accounts are read as history or as devotional memory, they show how deeply Christians saw in her the union of repentance, contemplative love, and apostolic witness.
Her feast on 22 July honors a woman whose love was courageous enough to stand by the Cross and attentive enough to recognize the Lord when He called her by name. She is patron of penitents, contemplatives, women, converts, and all who seek mercy and announce the Resurrection.
