Biography and devotion
St. Mary Elizabeth Hesselblad: life, patronage, and devotion
St. Mary Elizabeth Hesselblad was born on 4 June 1870 in Fåglavik, Sweden, into a Lutheran family. As a young woman she emigrated to the United States and trained as a nurse in New York. Her work among the sick brought her into contact with Catholic immigrants and with the sacramental life of the Church. After long searching and prayer, she entered the Catholic Church in 1902.
Her vocation drew her toward St. Bridget of Sweden and the old Bridgettine tradition. In Rome she became convinced that God wanted a renewed branch of the Order of the Most Holy Saviour. She worked to revive Bridgettine life in a form adapted to modern needs: prayer, hospitality, care for the sick, and a special concern for Christian unity. She eventually recovered the house of St. Bridget in Rome and made it a center of prayer and welcome.
Her holiness was tested during the Second World War. In Nazi-occupied Rome, Mother Elizabeth and her sisters hid Jewish families and others in danger. Her convent became a place of refuge. For this courage she was later recognized by Yad Vashem as one of the Righteous Among the Nations. Her Catholic faith did not narrow her charity; it gave her the courage to risk her congregation and her life for persecuted people.
She died in Rome on 24 April 1957 after years of poor health and constant labor. Pope John Paul II beatified her in 2000, and Pope Francis canonized her in 2016. One healing associated with her cause involved recovery from leukemia. She is remembered as a convert, nurse, foundress, rescuer of Jews, and servant of Christian unity, a Swedish saint whose life joined contemplative prayer to practical courage in one of the darkest periods of modern history.
Her recognition as Righteous Among the Nations is particularly important because it shows the historical concreteness of her charity. She did not merely speak about peace or unity; she opened religious space to people whose lives were threatened, making the house of St. Bridget a refuge during the racial laws and violence of wartime Rome.
