Biography and devotion

St. Martha: life, patronage, and devotion

St. Martha of Bethany lived in the first century and is known from the Gospels as the sister of St. Mary of Bethany and St. Lazarus. Their home at Bethany, near Jerusalem, was one of the places where Jesus was received with friendship and love. Martha is often remembered for hospitality, but the Gospel presents her as more than a capable homemaker. She was a woman of faith who spoke directly to Christ in moments of service, grief, and hope.

In Luke’s Gospel, Martha welcomes Jesus into her house and works to serve Him while Mary sits at His feet. Christ gently corrects her anxiety, not because service is worthless but because service must be ordered by listening to the Word. In John’s Gospel, after Lazarus dies, Martha goes out to meet Jesus and makes one of the great confessions of faith: she believes He is the Christ, the Son of God, the One coming into the world. Her conversation with Jesus comes immediately before the raising of Lazarus from the tomb.

This connection with Lazarus gives her life a strong Paschal character. Martha saw sorrow, burial, and the astonishing authority of Christ over death. Her faith did not remain abstract; it was spoken while her brother lay dead and before she fully understood what Jesus would do.

Later Western tradition connects Martha, Mary, and Lazarus with a mission to Provence. Medieval legend also associates Martha with the Tarasque, a monstrous creature she subdued by the power of Christ and the sign of the cross. Whether read as history or legend, the story reflects how Christians saw her: a woman whose practical faith could bring order, courage, and peace where fear had taken hold.

She is patron of homemakers, cooks, servers, and all whose charity is expressed through hospitality. Her life shows that holiness can begin at the door of one’s own home, where Christ is welcomed and served.
