Biography and devotion

St. Marie Rivier: life, patronage, and devotion

St. Marie Rivier was born Anne-Marie Rivier on 19 December 1768 in Montpezat-sous-Bauzon in southern France. As a small child she suffered a serious fall that left her unable to walk normally for several years. During that time she developed an intense devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary, praying before an image of the Pietà and promising that, if she recovered, she would dedicate herself to teaching children about God.

She regained enough strength to live an active apostolic life, though physical weakness never entirely left her. What could have become a limitation became part of her charism. She had a vigorous, almost fearless zeal for Christian education, especially for poor children and neglected girls. During the French Revolution, when religious instruction was restricted and Catholic life was under pressure, she continued to teach and gather children for prayer and catechism.

In 1796 she founded the Sisters of the Presentation of Mary. Her congregation was born in a time of upheaval, when France needed patient reconstruction of faith in families, schools, and villages. Marie was small in stature and often physically frail, but her energy was formidable. She formed sisters to teach, pray, and offer children a solid Christian education. Her work spread from France into other countries, and she became known as a woman-apostle because she carried the Gospel through the classroom.

She died on 3 February 1838. The miracle accepted for her canonization involved the healing of a child in the womb in the Philippines, later born as Angel Marie, after prayers for Blessed Marie Rivier’s intercession. Pope Francis canonized her in 2022. Her life shows how childhood suffering, Marian confidence, and educational zeal can become a mission for generations of children.

The schoolroom was her field of mission. She wanted children to know the catechism, the sacraments, and the love of the Blessed Virgin, not as decoration but as the foundation of a Christian life. Her sisters inherited that same practical zeal, bringing Marian devotion and disciplined education to places where the Revolution had left religious life wounded.
