Biography and devotion
St. Luigi Scrosoppi: life, patronage, and devotion
St. Luigi Scrosoppi was born in 1804 at Udine in northeastern Italy and became a priest, founder, and apostle of abandoned girls, orphans, and the poor. He is especially remembered for his trust in Divine Providence and for the Sisters of Providence of St. Cajetan of Thiene.
Luigi grew up in a devout family and was ordained a priest in 1827. His older brother, also a priest, had begun charitable work for poor and abandoned girls. Luigi threw himself into this apostolate with generosity. He begged for food and money, organized shelter, encouraged education, and helped give vulnerable children a future shaped by faith rather than neglect.
The needs around Udine were constant. Poverty, family instability, and social upheaval left many girls exposed to exploitation. Luigi understood that charity had to include formation. The children needed food and clothing, but they also needed prayer, education, discipline, affection, and the dignity of being treated as daughters of God.
To continue the work, he founded the Sisters of Providence. The name was not decorative; it expressed the heart of his spirituality. He trusted that God would provide for the poor when Christians acted with faith. At the same time, he worked tirelessly. Divine Providence did not excuse laziness; it called forth courage, organization, and sacrifice.
Luigi also served the sick and suffering during times of need and gave spiritual direction to many. He died on 3 April 1884. His canonization in 2001 was connected with a miracle attributed to his intercession. St. Luigi Scrosoppi’s life remains a strong Catholic witness to the protection of abandoned children. He saw danger, poverty, and shame surrounding the young and answered with a fatherly priesthood grounded in Providence.
The Sisters of Providence continued his work after his death, carrying his concern for girls, children, and the sick beyond the circumstances of Udine. His canonization miracle also gave his intercession a modern association with grave illness and hope where medicine seemed powerless.
The saint’s life is therefore especially close to those who build works for children with few resources. He shows that Providence often acts through persistence: one request, one classroom, one sister, one rescued child, and one obedient decision at a time.
