Biography and devotion
St. John Soan de Goto, Martyr: life, patronage, and devotion
St. John Soan de Goto was a young Japanese Jesuit brother and martyr, one of the Twenty-Six Martyrs of Japan crucified at Nagasaki in 1597. Born around 1578 on the Goto Islands, he grew up in the first generations of Japanese Christianity, when missionaries, native catechists, and newly baptized families were building a vigorous Catholic community despite increasing political suspicion.
John entered the service of the Jesuits and became a catechist. Though still young, he assisted missionary work with seriousness and courage. The mission in Japan depended greatly on men like him. They translated, taught prayers, explained doctrine, prepared converts, guided communities, and helped priests reach villages and towns. His vocation shows that the Japanese Church was not merely foreign-led; it produced its own witnesses, teachers, and martyrs.
In 1596 the ruler Toyotomi Hideyoshi ordered the arrest of several Franciscans, Jesuits, and lay Christians. John Soan de Goto was taken with other companions and forced to march a long distance through winter conditions toward Nagasaki. The prisoners had part of one ear cut off as a mark of public shame. Along the road they prayed, sang, and strengthened one another, turning humiliation into testimony.
On 5 February 1597, the martyrs were crucified on Nishizaka Hill overlooking Nagasaki. John, still in his teens, was fastened to a cross and killed by lances. Among his companions were St. Paul Miki, St. James Kisai, Franciscan missionaries, and several Japanese laymen and boys. Their witness became one of the foundational martyr stories of the Church in Japan.
John Soan de Goto was canonized with the other martyrs by Pope Pius IX in 1862. His life was brief, but it shows the maturity of grace in a young catechist who embraced Christ publicly when doing so meant death.
His youth also matters. The martyrs of Nagasaki included not only priests but boys, catechists, brothers, and lay helpers, showing that the Japanese mission had already produced native Catholic courage.
