Biography and devotion
St. Francisco Marto: life, patronage, and devotion
St. Francisco Marto was born on 11 June 1908 in Aljustrel, near Fátima, Portugal. With his sister St. Jacinta Marto and their cousin Sister Lúcia dos Santos, he received the apparitions of Our Lady at Fátima in 1917. He is patron of sick children and of children who pray with simplicity and reparation.
Francisco was a quiet shepherd boy. In 1916 the children reported apparitions of the Angel of Peace, who taught them prayer, adoration, and reparation. In 1917 they saw the Blessed Virgin Mary at the Cova da Iria. Francisco could see Our Lady but, according to the accounts, did not hear her words as Lúcia did. This shaped his spiritual life in a particular way. He became especially drawn to consoling Jesus, whom he believed was offended by sin.
After the apparitions, Francisco changed noticeably. He prayed the Rosary, accepted sacrifices, and often stayed near the tabernacle to keep company with the “hidden Jesus.” His holiness was not sentimental. He endured mockery, interrogation, family pressure, and even imprisonment with the other children when civil authorities tried to force them to deny the apparitions.
During the influenza epidemic that followed World War I, Francisco became seriously ill. He accepted suffering quietly and prepared for death with confession and Holy Communion. He died on 4 April 1919, not yet eleven years old. His body was later transferred to the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary at Fátima.
The miracle recognized for the canonization of Francisco and Jacinta involved the healing of a Brazilian child, Lucas Maeda de Oliveira, after his family invoked the shepherd children. Pope Francis canonized Francisco and Jacinta at Fátima in 2017, making them among the youngest non-martyr saints in the Church.
St. Francisco Marto’s life was short, but it was filled with adoration. His mission was to console Christ, pray the Rosary, and offer the hidden sacrifices of a child’s heart for sinners.
His spirituality was different from Jacinta’s. She was deeply moved by sacrifices for sinners, while Francisco often sought silence before the tabernacle, wanting to console the ‘hidden Jesus.’ That Eucharistic tenderness made his short life a school of contemplative prayer for children and adults alike.
