Biography and devotion

Bl. Constantine Fabricatus: life, patronage, and devotion

Blessed Constantius of Fabriano was a Dominican priest, prior, preacher, and peacemaker of fifteenth-century Italy. The registry name “Constantine Fabricatus” appears to be a Latinized or corrupted form of Constantius of Fabriano, known in Italian as Costanzo da Fabriano. He was born at Fabriano in the Marche, usually dated around 1401 or 1410, and died at Ascoli Piceno on 24 February 1481.

As a boy he entered the Dominican convent of Santa Lucia in Fabriano, receiving the habit while still young. He belonged to the Dominican movement of strict observance, which sought a more faithful life of prayer, study, poverty, discipline, and preaching within the Order of Preachers. Constantius was formed by holy Dominicans associated with the reforming spirit of the period, including the circle of St. Antoninus of Florence, and he later served as prior in several houses.

His life combined Dominican study with practical charity. He preached, governed communities, counseled the troubled, and worked for peace in towns divided by civic quarrels. Tradition remembers him for prophecy and miracle-working. One account says that on the feast of the Assumption in 1459 he saw the soul of St. Antoninus being carried into heaven, a detail later connected with the canonization tradition surrounding Antoninus. Other stories describe healings, spiritual insight, and even the raising of a young man believed dead, though such accounts should be treated as part of the devotional tradition attached to his cult.

Constantius died at Ascoli in 1481 after a long life of Dominican service. He was venerated as a friar whose sorrowful seriousness did not make him harsh, but attentive to the state of souls and the need for peace. His memory is strongest among Dominicans, who honor him as a preacher, reformer, prior, and counselor whose authority came from holiness rather than rank alone.
