Biography and devotion
St. Claude de la Colombière: life, patronage, and devotion
St. Claude de la Colombière was born in 1641 in the Dauphiné region of France and entered the Society of Jesus as a young man. He became a priest, preacher, spiritual director, writer, and one of the most important early apostles of devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. His life is inseparable from St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, the Visitation nun of Paray-le-Monial who received revelations concerning the Sacred Heart.
Claude was formed in the demanding Jesuit tradition of study, obedience, preaching, and discernment. He made a private vow to observe the Jesuit Rule with exceptional fidelity, and his spiritual writings show a soul intent on surrendering entirely to the will of God. In 1675 he was sent to Paray-le-Monial as superior of the Jesuit community. There he met Margaret Mary, who had suffered misunderstanding over the visions and messages she had received.
Recognizing the work of God in her soul, Claude became her confessor and defender. He encouraged her, tested the spirit carefully, and helped make known the devotion to the Sacred Heart. He did not invent the devotion, but his judgment, preaching, and writings helped protect it from dismissal and gave it a strong theological and pastoral witness.
Later Claude was sent to England as preacher to the Duchess of York. Anti-Catholic suspicion was fierce, and during the fabricated Popish Plot panic he was arrested, imprisoned, and threatened. His health broke under the conditions of imprisonment, and he was expelled from England. He returned to France weakened and died at Paray-le-Monial in 1682.
His writings include sermons, retreats, letters, and spiritual reflections, many centered on trust in God and fidelity to grace. Canonized by Pope St. John Paul II in 1992, St. Claude is remembered as the “faithful servant and perfect friend” of the Sacred Heart. His life shows how a wise confessor can help the Church receive a great devotion by combining obedience, discernment, courage, and love for Christ.
His own consecration to the Sacred Heart and his preaching helped transmit the devotion beyond the cloister of Paray-le-Monial. Claude’s suffering in England also gave his teaching a tested quality. He had spoken of trust in God and abandonment to Providence; then he had to live that trust through accusation, prison, illness, and political danger. His canonization confirmed the importance of a priest who knew how to discern mystical graces without credulity and how to preach divine love without reducing it to sentiment.
