Biography and devotion

Bl. Carlo Acutis: life, patronage, and devotion

Saint Carlo Acutis was an Italian teenager, computer enthusiast, catechist, and apostle of Eucharistic devotion. He was born in London on May 3, 1991, to Italian parents and was raised mainly in Milan. Although the older page title may call him Blessed, he was canonized on September 7, 2025, and should be presented as Saint Carlo Acutis.

Carlo’s holiness unfolded in a thoroughly modern setting: school, family life, friendship, computers, video games, parish Mass, and the internet. From childhood he showed unusual love for the Eucharist. He attended Mass frequently, spent time in Eucharistic adoration, prayed the Rosary, and tried to bring friends and classmates closer to God. His well-known phrase that the Eucharist is his highway to heaven summarizes the center of his life. He was not a seminarian or monk but a lay teenager whose sanctity grew in ordinary adolescent circumstances.

His computer ability became a tool for evangelization. Carlo created and helped organize a digital exhibition documenting Eucharistic miracles throughout the world. This work made him a fitting patron for computer programmers, internet users, and young Catholics learning how technology can serve faith rather than distraction. He also cared for the poor, defended classmates who were mocked, and showed a maturity that drew his own family deeper into Catholic practice.

In 2006 Carlo was diagnosed with acute leukemia. He offered his suffering for the pope and the Church and died on October 12, 2006, in Monza, at fifteen years old. His tomb in Assisi became a place of pilgrimage. The miracle recognized for his beatification involved the healing of a Brazilian child suffering from a serious pancreatic defect after prayers for Carlo’s intercession. A later miracle paved the way for his canonization. Carlo’s profile belongs especially to young people, students, computer programmers, and all who need to learn that sanctity is possible in contemporary life when the Eucharist becomes the center.
