Biography and devotion

St. André-Hubert Fournet: life, patronage, and devotion

St. André-Hubert Fournet was born in 1752 at Saint-Pierre-de-Maillé in France. As a young man he did not at first appear destined for heroic holiness, but after ordination the duties of parish life gradually formed him into a priest of courage, charity, and perseverance. His priesthood unfolded during one of the most dangerous periods in French Catholic history. When the French Revolution turned against the Church, priests were forced to choose between fidelity to Catholic communion and the oath demanded by the state. Fournet refused to compromise his priesthood. He went into exile for a time but later returned secretly to minister to the faithful. Disguised and hunted, he celebrated Mass, heard confessions, baptized, and strengthened Catholics who were deprived of ordinary parish life. His life changed further through his meeting with St. Elizabeth Bichier des Ages. Together they founded the Daughters of the Cross, a congregation devoted to teaching, nursing, and the care of the poor. This was not merely an administrative work. It answered the needs of rural France after revolution had torn apart parish structures, schools, and religious life. As spiritual father of the new community, Fournet guided the sisters in prayer, simplicity, and service. He continued parish ministry while forming women who would carry Christian education and works of mercy into villages where the Church needed to be rebuilt from the ground up. He died in 1834 and was canonized in 1933. His sanctity belongs to the history of persecuted clergy and religious renewal after devastation. He was not a famous theologian or public statesman, but a parish priest who risked his life to keep the sacraments near the people and then helped build a congregation for the poor, the sick, and children.

His partnership with St. Elizabeth Bichier des Ages was decisive. She brought courage, intelligence, and a heart for the poor; he gave priestly direction and a tested fidelity formed in persecution. The Daughters of the Cross began in a France where schools, hospitals, and parishes had been deeply wounded by revolutionary upheaval. Their work restored Catholic instruction and practical charity, especially in rural areas. Fournet’s holiness can be read through this movement from clandestine priest to founder: first he preserved the sacraments under danger, then helped rebuild Catholic life through religious women dedicated to teaching and mercy.
