Biography and devotion

St. Aloysius Gonzaga: life, patronage, and devotion

St. Aloysius Gonzaga was born Luigi Gonzaga on 9 March 1568 at Castiglione delle Stiviere in northern Italy. He was the eldest son of a noble family and was expected to inherit military and political responsibilities. From childhood, however, he showed a deep attraction to prayer, penance, and purity of heart.

His father wanted him formed as a soldier and courtier, so Aloysius spent time in princely courts, including Florence, Mantua, and Spain. Court life exposed him to ambition and moral danger, but it also clarified his vocation. He made a private vow of chastity and became determined to enter the Society of Jesus. His family resisted strongly, because his choice meant renouncing inheritance and rank.

After persistent struggle, he entered the Jesuit novitiate in Rome in 1585. There he tried to live obedience, humility, study, and prayer with intensity. His superiors sometimes had to moderate his severe penances, but they recognized the sincerity of his desire for God. He was not ordained; he remained a Jesuit scholastic.

In 1591 plague struck Rome. Aloysius helped care for the sick in Jesuit hospitals, carrying victims, washing them, and serving those whom many feared to touch. He contracted the disease himself. After months of suffering, he died on 21 June 1591 at the age of twenty-three.

Aloysius was canonized in 1726 and became a patron of youth and students. Modern devotion also invokes him for plague victims, AIDS patients, and caregivers, because his final act of charity was to risk his life for the sick. His holiness was not fragility or withdrawal; it was disciplined love, purity, and service carried into the hospital ward.

His vocation also had a Marian character. Jesuit biographies remember his devotion to Our Lady and his desire for purity not as contempt for the body but as a complete gift of self to Christ. This is why he became a model for youth: he fought for holiness amid privilege, temptation, ambition, and family opposition.
