Holy Archangels: life, patronage, and devotion
The Holy Archangels Michael, Gabriel and Raphael are honored by name in Scripture and Catholic tradition. They are not saints in the human sense but angelic persons, servants of God who appear in salvation history as messengers, protectors and ministers of divine providence. Their feast is kept on 29 September.
St. Michael is the great defender. The Book of Daniel presents Michael as a protector of God’s people, and the Book of Revelation describes Michael and his angels battling the dragon. Catholic devotion invokes him especially in spiritual warfare, protection against evil and defense of the Church. His name means “Who is like God?” and that question expresses his whole mission: to stand against pride and rebellion by proclaiming the sovereignty of the Lord.
St. Gabriel is the messenger of the Incarnation. In the Gospel of Luke, Gabriel appears to Zechariah to announce the birth of St. John the Baptist and then to the Virgin Mary at Nazareth to announce that she will conceive and bear Jesus, the Son of God. His name is associated with strength from God and with messages that open a new moment in salvation history. For this reason, he is invoked by messengers, communicators and those seeking clarity in their vocation.
St. Raphael appears in the Book of Tobit. He guides Tobias on his journey, helps bring healing to Tobit’s blindness and reveals himself as one of the angels who stand before God. His name is traditionally understood as “God heals,” and Catholic devotion invokes him for travelers, healing, marriages and guidance.
The archangels show that God’s providence reaches human life through protection, message and healing. They do not draw attention away from Christ. They serve Him and lead the faithful to trust that heaven is not distant from the struggles of earth.
A richer final page could treat each archangel separately with Scripture references: Michael in Daniel and Revelation, Gabriel in Luke, and Raphael in Tobit. It should also explain that angels are creatures, not divine beings. Their holiness consists in perfect obedience to God’s will, and their help is always directed toward worship of God, protection of the faithful, and service to salvation.
